Subscribe NowBuying Used Printing Equipment in Dubai: A 12-Point Checklist for Dryers, Dampening Units and Chillers
Quick answer: Before buying a used dryer, dampening unit or chiller for a sheetfed press, confirm that it fits your exact press model and format, check its serial number, age and service history, watch it run under load, and get the condition, warranty and return terms in writing. Peripheral units are matched to specific presses, so compatibility and documentation matter more than price.
Why are printers in the UAE looking at used equipment?
Packaging is a growing part of the regional print market. Mordor Intelligence forecasts that the GCC folding carton market will grow from about USD 2.32 billion in 2026 to USD 2.92 billion by 2031, a compound annual growth rate of 4.73%. For the UAE alone, it projects growth from about USD 446.6 million in 2026 to USD 595.5 million by 2031, or 5.92% a year.
Printers adding coating, drying or cooling capacity to keep pace with this demand often look at used peripherals as a way to add capacity at lower capital cost. The industry is meeting in Dubai as well: Gulf Print & Pack 2026, rescheduled from March–April, runs 28–30 September at Dubai World Trade Centre.
Used equipment can be a sound choice, but only when you check it properly.
What are DryStar dryers and Technotrans units?
Heidelberg DryStar dryers. Heidelberg describes the DryStar Combination as its most frequently used dryer, used for drying water-based coatings in the extended delivery. It combines hot air with infrared lamps. Heidelberg also says the dryers are tailored to each press’s sheet travel, and its newer Combination Eco model saves up to 30% energy, which means older units will not match that figure.
Technotrans CombiStar alpha.c. Technotrans describes the alpha.c as a compact combination unit for small to medium-format sheetfed offset presses. It combines dampening solution circulation and ink unit temperature control in one system.
Chillers and re-cooling systems. Cooling equipment keeps ink and dampening temperatures stable. Technotrans notes that the choice of cooling system depends on the specific cooling requirement and the local climate, which is worth remembering in Gulf summer conditions.
The 12-point checklist for buying used printing press equipment
Compatibility
- Match the press model and format. A dryer for a Speedmaster XL 106 is not automatically right for a smaller press. Ask the supplier to confirm the exact machines the unit fits.
- Record the serial number and year. Peripherals carry their own serial number and material (HDM) number. Check that they are legible and consistent with the paperwork.
- Confirm electrical specifications. Check voltage, frequency and phases against your site supply, and have your electrician verify them before ordering.
Condition
- Ask for the service and maintenance history. Look for records of filter, pump and component replacements.
- Inspect the unit in person or by detailed video. Look for corrosion, leaks, damaged wiring and worn panels.
- Check for signs of coolant or fluid leaks around pumps, hoses and connections.
- See it run under load. Ask for a live or recorded test showing normal operation, temperatures and no alarms.
- For cooling units, ask about the compressor and refrigerant type. Confirm whether the compressor has been serviced and what refrigerant the unit uses.
Supply and support
- Check spare part availability for that model. A unit is only as useful as your ability to keep it running. Ask which wear parts are available and how quickly.
- Ask who handles transport, installation and commissioning, and what it costs.
Paperwork
- Get condition, warranty and return terms in writing. State whether the unit is used, tested or refurbished, and what the warranty covers.
- Keep the documentation. Retain the invoice, test report and any manuals for future service and resale.
What red flags should you watch for?
- No serial number, or a serial number that does not match the paperwork
- A price far below similar units with no explanation
- Unwillingness to provide a video test or service records
- No written warranty or return policy
- Vague statements such as “fits all presses”

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check before buying used printing equipment in Dubai?
Confirm the unit fits your exact press model, check its serial number, age and service history, see it running under load, verify the electrical specification, and get the condition, warranty and return terms in writing.
What is a Technotrans CombiStar alpha.c?
It is a compact combination unit for small to medium-format sheetfed offset presses. It combines dampening solution circulation and ink unit temperature control in a single system, according to Technotrans.
What does a Heidelberg DryStar Combination dryer do?
It dries water-based coatings in the extended delivery of a sheetfed press using hot air and infrared. Heidelberg describes it as its most frequently used dryer.
Can a DryStar dryer from one Speedmaster fit another model?
Do not assume so. Heidelberg says its dryers are tailored to each press and its sheet travel, so always ask the supplier to confirm compatibility with your exact press model and format.
Is buying used printing equipment cheaper than buying new?
Used equipment usually costs less up front, but the total cost depends on condition, age, spare part availability and installation. Compare quotes on the same specification and ask for warranty terms in writing.
